How often should a dryer vent be cleaned?
Once a year works for most households. Bigger families, pets that shed, or long duct runs through a basement ceiling may need it more often. If drying times have crept up over a season, that's your real signal, not the calendar.
Can I just use a leaf blower on the vent?
It pushes some loose lint but skips the packed layer stuck to the duct walls. Rotary brushes scrub that coating off. A blower also can't tell you about a crushed elbow or a joint that came apart inside a wall cavity.
Is rigid metal duct better than the flexible kind?
Rigid or semi-rigid metal is smoother inside, so lint has less to grab. Plastic and foil accordion hose traps lint in every ridge and crushes easily behind a dryer. We swap those out when we find them.
My vent goes up through the roof. Can that be cleaned?
Yes. Long vertical runs are common in older twins and split-levels. They collect more lint because gravity works against the airflow. We brush from the accessible end and check exit airflow to confirm the whole run is clear.
Why is my laundry room so humid?
Usually the duct came apart somewhere between the dryer and the outside wall. All that moist air dumps into your basement or closet instead. That leads to mildew smells and damp drywall, so it's worth tracing right away.
Does a clogged vent hurt the dryer itself?
It can. Restricted airflow makes the machine cycle hotter and run longer, which stresses the heating element, the thermal fuse, and the belt. Plenty of the dryer repairs we handle trace back to a vent nobody had cleaned.
