What "runs but no heat" actually tells us
Your dryer has two jobs: turn the drum and make heat. They run on different parts. When the drum still spins, the motor, belt and drive are doing their work. So we stop looking there. Instead we look at airflow and the heating circuit. Airflow problems are the cheapest and most common. Heating parts fail too, and they usually fail all at once, not gradually. If your clothes went from dry to damp over several weeks, that points to a clogged vent. If heat quit overnight, that points to a failed part.
Cause family one: blocked airflow
Lint is the usual suspect. It packs into the vent hose, the wall duct, and the flap outside. A dryer that cannot push air out will overheat inside, trip its safety limit, and keep tumbling with no heat. In older Norristown twins and rowhomes, the vent run can be long and full of elbows, which makes it worse. Signs to watch for: the outside of the dryer feels hot, the laundry room gets steamy, or the exterior flap barely moves when the machine runs. Clear the vent before spending money on parts. Sometimes that is the whole repair.
Cause family two: heating parts and safety switches
Every dryer has a heat source plus safety devices that shut heat off when things get too hot. Electric models use a heating element, a thermal fuse and one or more thermostats. Gas models use an igniter, a gas valve coil and flame sensor. Any one of these can open and kill heat while the drum keeps spinning happily. Here is the important part: these parts often fail because airflow was already restricted. Replacing the part without clearing the vent means you will be calling again. We test the parts and check the duct in the same visit.
Cause family three: power and controls
Electric dryers use two legs of 240-volt power. Lose one leg and you get a spinning drum with no heat. That can be a tripped half of a double breaker or a supply issue. Check your panel for a breaker that looks partly off. Reset it once. If it trips again, stop and call us. On newer machines with digital boards, a bad control or a sensor reading wrong can also block the heat cycle. Also check the settings. Air Fluff and Air Dry run with no heat on purpose, and a bumped knob fools people all the time.

Can I still use my dryer if it runs but never heats?
You can, but it wastes electricity or gas and does not dry clothes. If a blocked vent is the cause, running it repeatedly builds heat inside the cabinet. Better to unplug it or shut it off and get it looked at.
Why did the heat quit right after I cleaned the lint trap?
Usually a coincidence in timing. A partly clogged vent can limp along for months, then push a thermal fuse or thermostat over the edge. The cleaning did not cause it. The blockage further down the duct did.
Does no heat mean I need a whole new dryer?
Rarely. Heating parts, fuses and thermostats are replaceable on most machines. We look at the age, the condition of the drum and bearings, and part availability, then tell you plainly whether repair makes sense.
