What "runs but no heat" actually tells us
Your dryer does two separate jobs: it turns the drum and it makes heat, and those run on different parts. If the drum still spins, the motor, belt and drive are doing their work, so we stop looking there. We go to airflow and the heating circuit instead. Airflow problems are the cheapest and the most common. Heating parts fail too, and when they go, they usually go all at once. Clothes that got damper over several weeks point to a clogged vent. Heat that quit overnight points to a failed part.
Cause family one: blocked airflow
Lint is the usual suspect. It packs into the vent hose, the wall duct and the flap outside. A dryer that can't push air out will overheat inside itself, trip its safety limit, and keep tumbling with no heat at all. In older Norristown twins and rowhomes the vent run is often long with a bunch of elbows, which makes the whole thing worse. Watch for a cabinet that feels hot to the hand, a steamy laundry room, or an exterior flap that barely moves while the machine runs. Clear the vent before you spend money on parts. Sometimes that is the entire repair.
Cause family two: heating parts and safety switches
Every dryer has a heat source plus safety devices that cut heat when things get too hot. Electric models use a heating element, a thermal fuse and one or more thermostats. Gas models use an igniter, a gas valve coil and a flame sensor. Any one of them can open and kill the heat while the drum keeps spinning along like nothing happened. Here's the part that matters: those pieces often fail because airflow was already restricted. Replace the part, leave the vent packed, and you'll be calling us again. We test the parts and check the duct on the same visit.
Cause family three: power and controls
Electric dryers run on two legs of 240-volt power. Lose one leg and you get a spinning drum with no heat. That might be half a double breaker tripped, or a supply issue. Look at your panel for a breaker sitting partly off and reset it once. If it trips again, stop there and call us. On newer machines with digital boards, a bad control or a sensor reading wrong can block the heat cycle too. And check your settings. Air Fluff and Air Dry run with no heat on purpose, and a bumped knob fools people all the time.

Here's what's safe for you to do: make sure the cycle isn't Air Dry, clean the lint screen, pull the dryer out and vacuum the vent hose, then step outside and watch the flap while the machine runs. Glance at the breaker panel while you're at it. That's the line. Don't open panels, don't touch gas connections, don't test wiring. Can I still use my dryer if it runs but never heats?
You can, but you're paying for electricity or gas and getting no dry clothes out of it. If a blocked vent is behind it, running load after load keeps building heat inside the cabinet. Shut it off or unplug it and get it looked at.
Why did the heat quit right after I cleaned the lint trap?
Almost always coincidence in the timing. A partly clogged vent can limp along for months, then finally push a thermal fuse or thermostat past its limit. Cleaning the trap didn't cause it. The blockage further down the duct did.
Does no heat mean I need a whole new dryer?
Rarely. Heating parts, fuses and thermostats can be replaced on most machines. We look at the age of the unit, how the drum and bearings are holding up, and whether parts are still available, then tell you straight whether a repair makes sense.
