When an Appliance Keeps Tripping the Breaker
If your breaker keeps tripping when an appliance runs, unplug that appliance and leave the breaker off until you've worked through the checks below. Do these things first, in this order
1. Unplug the appliance, or switch it off at the wall if it's hardwired. Don't reset the breaker yet. 2. Look at the cord and plug. Cracked insulation, melted prongs, dark scorch marks on the outlet, any of those means stop right there. 3. Sniff around the outlet and behind the unit. A hot plastic or fishy smell means heat where there shouldn't be any. 4. With the appliance unplugged, reset the breaker once. If it holds, the appliance is the likely problem. If it trips again with nothing plugged in, the wiring is. 5. Write down what the appliance was doing when it tripped. Spin cycle? Heat cycle? Ice maker? That detail saves us time.
What not to do
Don't keep resetting. Each reset pushes current through whatever is failing, and repeated arcing is how a nuisance trip turns into a burnt outlet. Don't tape or wedge the breaker to hold it on. Don't move the appliance to a different circuit to "see if it works there," because you've moved the fault, not fixed it. Skip the extension cord and the power strip; big appliances draw more than those are built for. Leave the electrical panel cover alone. And don't pull the back panel off a washer, dryer, or fridge to poke around. Components in there hold a charge even unplugged. That's our job, with the right tools.
When to stop and leave the house
Some signs mean you stop troubleshooting and get people out. Smoke, visible flame, or a scorch mark spreading on the wall. Buzzing or crackling from the outlet or the panel. Warm or discolored cover plates. A burning smell that keeps getting stronger after you've cut power. In any of those cases, leave and call 911 from outside. If you smell gas near a range or gas dryer, that rotten-egg odor, don't touch switches, don't hunt for the leak, and don't reset anything. Get out, then call the gas utility from down the block. Gas comes before appliance repair, every time.
Is it the appliance or the house wiring?
The unplug test above sorts most of it. A breaker that holds with the appliance off, then trips when the machine hits a certain point in its cycle, points at the machine. Things we find often: a shorted dryer heating element, a failing motor winding, a water-soaked dishwasher control, a compressor drawing too hard on an old fridge. A breaker that trips with nothing running, or one that trips on several different outlets, points at the circuit instead. Older Norristown-area homes and split-levels sometimes have one kitchen circuit doing the work of three. That's an electrician's call, not ours.
Who to call, and when
Call the power company if the whole house is dark, if lights are dimming and surging on their own, or if you see damage to the wires coming to the house. Call a licensed electrician if the breaker trips with everything unplugged, if outlets are warm, or if the panel is buzzing. Can I use the appliance until the repair visit if I'm careful?
No. A tripping breaker means a fault is drawing current it shouldn't. Keep it unplugged, or the circuit off if it's hardwired. Running it between trips risks a fire and usually makes the damage worse.
Why does it only trip halfway through a cycle?
Because that's when the failing part switches on. Heating elements, drain pumps, and defrost heaters all come in partway through. Tell us the exact point in the cycle and we know which component to check first.
My GFCI outlet keeps popping instead of the breaker. Same thing?
Similar message, different sensor. A GFCI watches for current leaking to ground, often from moisture inside the appliance. Unplug the unit and reset the outlet once. If it pops again with the appliance plugged in, call us.
