Safe things to check first

My freezer stopped but the fridge side is still cold. Why?
On most side-by-sides and top-freezers, the cold air gets made in the freezer and shared with the fridge. When only the freezer warms up, it usually points to a defrost problem or an evaporator fan rather than the compressor. We test both.
How fast should I unload the food?
A closed freezer holds cold for roughly a day if it's full. Keep the door shut. Group items tightly and move anything already soft to a cooler or a neighbor's freezer. Don't refreeze food that got to room temperature.
Is it worth repairing an older chest freezer?
Often yes. Chest freezers are simple machines, and lids, gaskets, thermostats, and relays are all serviceable. We look at the sealed system's condition first. If the compressor is failing on a very old unit, we'll say so honestly.
Can I just defrost it manually and move on?
Sometimes that buys you weeks. But heavy frost coming right back means the defrost cycle isn't running, and it will keep coming back. A manual defrost is a fine stopgap while you wait on a visit. It isn't a fix.
Do you work on garage and basement freezers?
Yes. Unheated spaces cause their own trouble. A freezer in a cold garage may stop cycling because the thermostat thinks it's already cold enough in there. Some models handle that, some need a kit. We'll check which yours is.
