The Dishwasher Filter Most Homes Never Clean

What a clogged filter does over months
The filter catches food so it does not get sprayed back onto your dishes. When it packs solid, water stops draining through it freely and the pump has to push harder. Dirty water gets recirculated instead of flushed, so a fine film settles on glasses and the tub walls. Grease builds up in the drain hose. Trapped food rots between cycles, and that smell moves into the plastic and the door gasket. Over a year or two the strain shows up as weak spray, standing water in the bottom, and a motor that runs longer than it used to. None of that starts as a broken part. It starts as a full filter.
The habit that prevents all of it
Pull out the lower rack and look at the floor of the tub, usually near the back center. You will see a round cap or cylinder that twists a quarter turn and lifts out. Under it sits a flat mesh screen that often lifts out too. Rinse both under hot tap water, and work the mesh with an old toothbrush and a drop of dish soap. Skip the wire brush, it tears the screen. Wipe out any seeds, labels or glass chips sitting in the well. Drop everything back in, twist to lock, and make sure it is seated. Three minutes, start to finish.
How often to actually do it
Once a month covers most kitchens. If you scrape plates well and run the dishwasher a few times a week, every two months is fine. Bump it to every two weeks if you rinse nothing, cook a lot of rice or pasta, or run the machine daily for a full house. After a holiday meal, check it the next day. That is when filters get hammered. Set a phone reminder on the first of the month, or tie it to something you already do like changing the sponge. The point is not perfection. The point is never letting the mesh go a full year untouched.
Signs prevention time has passed
Standing water in the bottom that never drains means the clog is past the filter, likely in the drain hose or pump. A grinding or buzzing noise during the drain cycle points to something hard lodged where it should not be. If dishes come out chalky even after a clean filter and fresh rinse aid, the spray arms may be blocked. A sour smell that comes back days after cleaning usually means buildup in the sump or hose. Water on the floor is a stop sign. Turn the dishwasher off, shut the water valve under the sink if you can reach it, and call us.
Small things that keep the filter cleaner
Scrape plates into the trash. You do not need to pre-wash, but chicken bones, corn husks, coffee grounds and the stickers off produce all belong in the trash, not the tub. Run the hot tap at your sink until it runs hot before you start a cycle, so the dishwasher fills warm instead of cold. Load so nothing blocks the spray arms from spinning, and give them a nudge by hand before you close the door. Once a month, run an empty hot cycle with a cup of white vinegar on the top rack. In tight galley kitchens, that vinegar run also helps the drain line.

Do all dishwashers have a filter you can remove?
Most made in roughly the last fifteen years do. Older models often used a hard food grinder instead, with no removable screen. Check your manual, or look under the bottom rack for a twist-out cylinder.
Can I run the filter through the dishwasher itself?
No. It needs hot running water and a soft brush to break the grease loose. Cycling it in place is what clogged it in the first place. Hand cleaning is the only thing that clears the mesh.
Will cleaning the filter fix standing water in the bottom?
Sometimes, if the clog is only in the screen. If water still sits after cleaning, the blockage is deeper in the drain hose or pump. That needs a service call. Reach us.
